Review | Etude House Color My Brows

Have you ever had the problem where your hair colour does not match the colour of your brows? I think this is an issue that everyone who dyes their hair faces, especially if you dye your hair a shade that isn't close to your natural hair colour.

I've dyed my hair a lighter shade recently and although I knew my brow shade did not match my hair colour, I didn't really pay much attention to that because my makeup routine is complicated enough without adding yet another step in. That is, until my sister asked me to try her brow mascara, and I was then sucked into the world of amazing brow mascaras.

Brow mascaras are essentially, well, mascaras for your brows. While typical mascaras are used for eyelashes and most of them come in black because every one loves thick, dark, lustrous eyelashes, brow mascaras come in a variety of colours, mostly in shades of blonde and browns. You do your brows as usual, with a pencil or a powder, then brush the mascara to seal your brows into place and also to tint the brow hairs to whichever coloured mascara you chose. It really is that simple.

The brow mascara of the moment is from Etude House and it is the Color My Brows in #04 Natural Brown. On the packaging, it says that brow mascara combs to set, shade and moisten brows for a refined natural look.

Directions: Use wand to gather makeup and apply to brows by coating along direction of growth.

This brow mascara comes in a light brown, round plastic tube. The packaging is pretty similar to any eye lash mascara you find in the market, just at probably 2/3 of the length of a normal eyelash mascara. It comes with a spoolie inside that is of a decent size (not too big or small) and it generally dispenses just the right amount of product. If you pull out the spoolie and you see a big glob of product at the end, just rub the end of the spoolie onto the opening of the mascara to remove some of the product and you're pretty much good to go.

There's no real scent to it, unless you stick the brush up your nose then you'll probably get a whiff of something I can't really describe. Either way, you'll definitely not be able to smell it even if you apply it onto your brows.

The colour, if I attempt to describe it, is a light, slightly ashy, yellowish-brown which is a perfect match for the hair colour I'm rocking at this moment in time. I believe Etude House has brought out 5 shades in total for this range which isn't a lot but the colours are a good mixture of reddish browns to blonde so you'll probably be able to find one colour that matches your hair colour, assuming your hair colour is a shade of brown of course.

The brow mascara helps to keep my brow hairs in place and they really do not budge. It also lasts throughout the whole day. I've worn this brow mascara on my brows for up to 16 hours once or twice I believe and it was still there at the end of the day. It definitely helps to prolong the lasting capabilities of the brow pencil I use before this mascara as well.

And now, the actual results of the product. Now, I know that I do have decently thick brows that do not actually require using any brow products except to shape it the way I want them to be. I've had so many people tell me that I actually don't need to touch my brows at all because you can see them. But I like to do so, and I enjoy doing my brows every single day so please, no hate.

In the first photo, I basically have no brow products on at all. It's my natural brow shape without any brow pencils or brow mascara on.

In this photo, I just drew them with Innisfree's Eco Brow Pencil in #4. You can tell that my brow colour is pretty dark and bold so I needed a lighter shade of brow mascara to help soften the boldness of it.

(I don't really draw a lot on my brows by the way. I pretty much just outline the shape, and draw the ends and that's it. I just have really thick and coarse brow hairs that are really black, that's why they are hard to draw without looking overdone?)

That being said, the pigmentation is great. Even with brow hairs as stubbornly black as mine, the mascara covers them up really well which was really surprising because I didn't expect it to.

And this is with the brow mascara on. I know it doesn't look like it did much in the photo but in real life you can tell that the colour is a better match for my current hair colour than without the mascara on. I now cannot draw my brows without topping them up with mascara. The mascara takes like literally 30 seconds to do and you're good to go.

Overall:

PROS:

  • Decent colour range
  • Easy to use
  • Affordable
  • Softens natural colour of brow hairs
  • Good colour match for my hair colour
  • Lasts for the whole day
  • Prolongs lasting capabilities of brow makeup underneath
  • Doesn't smudge

CONS:

  • None really

If you're looking for something that's inexpensive compared to the hyped up Benefit Gimme Brow, then this is probably one for the masses. I love this brow mascara and this is definitely high up on the list of repurchases I'll have to make when I make it back to Korea eventually. I did buy some other brow products from Western brands recently so I'm in no hurry to repurchase this.

The Color My Brows is definitely a game changer for someone who has never tried brow mascaras before and I literally cannot leave the house without it anymore.
