I really hate doing project work for a multitude of reasons even though I do know and understand the merits of working in groups.
I honestly feel that the reasons against group work is way way more than that of the benefits?
The most obvious reason is how it is SO HARD to find a common meeting time where everyone is free to make it, especially when you have so many projects to do (I have 4 on-going ones) plus every single project is with different groups of people. Try to find common times with 16 different people.
And if, I cannot make it for a meeting for a legit reason, most of the time, they will just tell me "Yq you will be doing XX and YY parts" but don't even bother to say what I'm supposed to do, or how it links back to everyone else's part so at least I know the direction I'm supposed to start doing my part on. DO YOU KNOW HOW FRUSTRATING IT IS? I have to clarify and ask everyone what I'm supposed to be doing and it makes me feel like an idiot when in the first place, all they had to do is ask someone to be in charge of typing out what is being discussed in the meeting into a Google Doc and remember to include what is discussed for everyone's part so not only the people unable to attend knows what to do, but also when everyone who was present for the meeting goes back, they will also not forget little points that was discussed. Isn't that common sense?
Also, I hate it when people set up meetings like "Oh let's meet next Monday" AND DON'T SPECIFY THE TIME AND PLACE. Hi, I know Singapore isn't that big but I've got things to do as well and at least if you decide to have a meeting on Monday then let me know the time and place so I can reshuffle my other commitments to accommodate your meeting request. Common sense once again.
Lastly, it isn't that much to expect people to commit to a deadline. If we ALL agreed that by XX time on YY day, everyone's part has to be up. THEN KEEP TO IT. If you can't, voice out earlier! I hate meetings where everyone's just rushing out their part and the people who actually did theirs are wasting their time waiting.WHY. Your time very precious and our time isn't?
Or people who insist on meeting to discuss things face-to-face when it can be done online. I don't mind meeting face-to-face if we're meeting at a centralized place but more often than not, meetings are held in school which is almost a 2h journey, ONE WAY, for me. To meet you. To waste my time.
All these may be fine if you only have ONE project, and all your other modules are pretty relaxed but when you have 5 textbooks, all 7xx pages thick to read, and 4 on-going projects with deadlines all on the same week, as well as 2 jobs to work, then yeah, it makes me helluva pissed off when people don't practice courtesy and
Even if you ignore my jobs, the study load I have to do is already crazy enough. But people apparently are too dense to make things easier for everyone.
